very impressive! i'm not that experienced with color pencils only graphite but it feels
like you must have layered different colors ofer each other in order to create such amazing lighting techniques ?

Thanks for your words!
Yeah with colored pencils, you cannot blend colors unless you use some kind of solvent, so in order to create fine shadings you'll need to layer many fine hatchings on top of each other.

ahhhh very interesting. but don't water soluble colors still blend even if dry?
anyway i still can't get over how well you've done this. the subtle differences in light effect all over are superb!!

Water based pencils do blend with water, a technique I sometimes use for the underpainting. The result is somewhat like an aquarel, see picture 2:

markus-klein-artwork.de/work-i…

But they don't bled in dry state. What you can do is blur a hatching to some degree, using a burnisher. But this only works very locally, meaning you can't use that to make fine gradients.

wonderful!!! may I ask you what brand and shade of white you used, especially for the reflective areas in the eye and on the nose? I am slowly going crazy searching for a colored pencil opaque enough to produce this white on colored paper! Thank you!

Hi and thank you!
The whole image was drawn with Faber-Castell "Albrecht Dürer" watercolor pencils. You can moisturize the tip to create nearly opaque spots. :)
